The Giving Tree

by Shel Silverstein
Recommended reading ages: 4-6 years
Lexile measure: 530L
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Recommended reading ages: 4-6 years Lexile measure: 530L The Giving Tree is a short children’s picture book by American writer Shel Silverstein. It tells a simple tale of the relationship between a tree and a boy. As the boy grows from childhood to old age, the tree selflessly gives up its apples, branches and trunk in order to make him happy. The themes of love, generosity and selflessness in Silverstein’s book have made it a classic children’s fable, teaching young readers about the joys of giving. With simple vocabulary, sentence structure and plot, young readers will find it easy to understand and enjoy Silverstein’s tale. The story is also accompanied by drawings on every page that help to convey the story and keep young readers’ interest. The book also opens up a valuable discussion about generosity versus greediness. While younger children often enjoy the book as a sweet tale of selfless love, older readers can use their critical thinking skills to consider whether they believe the tree is right to give away all it has to the boy, and whether the boy takes the tree’s generosity for granted. Readers can also reflect on the different desires the boy has as he grows older and asks the tree for money, a house, a boat, and other material wants, and discuss which of these they think is most important. In this way The Giving Tree is appropriate both for a wide range of ages and can challenge readers to reflect on right and wrong in relationships with family and friends.

Hercule Poirot Mysteries

by Agatha Christie
Recommended reading age: 12-14 years
Lexile measure: 650L ~ 800L

English writer Agatha Christie, known as “The Queen of Crime”, has published tens of detective mysteries both thrilling and thought-provoking. Her most famous series follows Hercule Poirot, an eccentric Belgian detective, as he methodically solves cases all over the world. Though the plot of Christie’s novels often revolves around a mystery murder, the focus is on the detective’s reasoning and the facts of the case. Thus, the content of the books is appropriate for younger readers, engaging them intellectually rather than shocking them with gory details.

Time Cat

The Remarkable Journeys of Jason and Gareth
by Lloyd Alexander
Recommended reading age: 8-12 years
Lexile measure: 660L
Picture
Time Cat is a delightful, imaginative short novel by American fantasy writer Lloyd Alexander. It tells the story of a young boy and his cat who are transported across historical eras and places, from Ancient Rome to the Incas in Peru. With a range of vivid characters, constant action and back-and-forth dialogue, Time Cat is fantastic at capturing young readers’ attention; at the same time, it engages them in a fresh retelling of significant eras in history. As the action moves from Roman Britain to Heian-era Japan to various other snapshots in time, readers not only learn a wide range of historical facts, but are also immersed in the atmosphere and subtleties of each culture.
And here are the reasons why we recommend this book, and what kids, at different ages, are expected to get from their journeys with Jason and Gareth.
