孩子真正理解一件事,代表什麼?

孩子長大後,可能不記得自己寫過哪些學習單、參加過哪些測驗,卻很可能記得曾經親手做過的專題,例如設計一台機器人,或完成一場成果發表。這些需要孩子主動創作、探索與解決問題的經驗,往往比一次考試的分數更令人印象深刻。

許多台灣及亞洲家長,過去接受的教育較重視考試與背誦。背誦確實有助於建立基礎知識,也是學習過程中不可缺少的一部分;然而,學習還包括理解、應用、分析與創造。

什麼是專題式學習?

專題式學習(Project-Based Learning,PBL)是一種主動學習方式。學生透過處理貼近真實生活的問題,設計具體而有意義的成果,在過程中建立知識、技能與自信。

在專題式學習中,老師的角色是引導孩子思考,而非直接提供所有答案。老師會透過沒有單一標準答案的開放式問題,帶領孩子整理想法、嘗試不同方法,並思考如何將已經學會的知識與技能,運用在全新或未曾預料的情境中。

這樣的學習過程,也能幫助孩子培養面對挫折、調整方法與繼續嘗試的能力。

例如:

  • 學習機器人時,孩子不只閱讀相關知識,也有機會親自設計與編寫程式,完成自己的機器人。
  • 學習太空知識時,孩子除了記住行星資料,也可能製作行星模型或進行簡單實驗,將抽象概念轉化為看得見的成果。

Lighthouse Camps 的課程不以反覆填寫學習單或進行機械式練習為主。許多課程都會鼓勵孩子在營隊結束前,完成一項能夠與他人分享的作品或成果。

每門課培養的能力不同,但採用相同的核心方式:讓孩子透過創作有意義的成果來學習。

程式設計、機器人與虛擬世界營隊

在程式設計、機器人與虛擬世界課程中,孩子不需要只記住程式指令,而會在老師的引導下,設計自己的遊戲、機器人、動畫或虛擬世界。

演說、新聞採訪與寫作營隊

演說、新聞採訪與寫作營隊,則透過實際練習培養孩子的溝通與表達能力。

孩子可能需要完成一場演說、撰寫一篇文章、訪問同學,或共同製作一支影片。老師會在每個階段提供引導,協助孩子整理思緒、組織內容,並更有自信地表達自己的觀點。

為什麼動手做,能讓孩子學得更深?

研究顯示,相較於單純背誦,當學生能夠實際運用所學知識時,通常更能深入理解學習內容。

以遊戲設計為例,孩子需要理解不同程式概念如何互相配合,才能讓遊戲順利運作。他們無法只把每一道指令分開記憶,而必須了解指令之間的關係,以及整套程式的運作邏輯。

What Does It Mean to Truly Understand?

A child may not remember every worksheet or test they completed, but they are far more likely to remember the projects they created—such as designing a robot or giving a presentation. Experiences that ask children to create, investigate, and solve problems often stay with them much longer than a single test score.

Many parents in Taiwan and across Asia grew up in education systems that placed strong emphasis on examinations and memorisation. Memorisation plays an important role in building foundational knowledge, but it is only one part of learning. Children also need opportunities to understand, apply, analyse, and create.

Project-based learning offers another approach. Instead of only retaining information, children use what they know to create, investigate, and solve problems. Lighthouse Camps incorporates project-based learning into its programmes so that children can build confidence, follow their curiosity, and develop practical skills while enjoying the learning process.

What Is Project-Based Learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) is a form of active learning in which students gain knowledge, skills, and confidence by developing practical and meaningful responses to real-world questions or problems.

In PBL, teachers guide rather than dictate. Through open-ended questions that do not have one fixed “right” answer, students learn how to organise their thinking, test different approaches, and adapt their knowledge and skills to unfamiliar situations.

  • Rather than only reading about robotics, children may design, build, and program a robot of their own.

Creating a game, for example, requires children to understand how different programming concepts work together. They cannot treat each command as an isolated item to memorise; they need to understand the relationships and logic that make the whole programme work.

Preparing a presentation has a similar effect. To explain an idea clearly to someone else, students must organise what they have learned, identify the key points, and communicate them in a way that makes sense.
