Study Ahead Case Studies – In order to protect the student’s privacy, no real names are used.
Mike, seven years old, is currently first grade, studies at an international school in Taipei. He had attended both math and English lessons from the “Study Ahead” program since January. Mike’s mother said “In the international school, there are an average of twenty students in a class. Mike is the shy type. He would not raise his hand when he has a question, and when he comes home, the question usually left unanswered because he had forgotten them already. PTA teachers would often say that he is easily distracted in class, and he frequently falls behind in English class. Mike’s mother is troubled. She knows this problem has to be resolved as soon as possible. As the result, she was able to find out about our program through her friend. After the assessment in the first lesson, the teacher found out that Mike is an extremely intelligent student, especially in the subject of math. English wise, Mike’s phonic and reading abilities are alright, but is comparatively weak when it comes to reading comprehension. Often times, he would be unable to pinpoint the main idea of an article, nor would he be able to verbally explain the summary of the article. To combat this, the teacher had asked Mike what his favorite genres of articles are. Then, the teacher would pick stories according to the genres that he is interested in and do different story reading as well as vocabulary training. Mike is slowly able to catch up to the pace of the class and he is now more confident in himself than ever. Many parents may face similar problems, discovering that their child may be easily distracted or afraid to ask questions in a group environment. When a child counters a question that is not immediately answered at that moment, it will take even longer time for the child to understand and resolve it afterward. So, not only does the “Study Ahead” program help the child get rid of his or her learning obstacles, but also helps the child to be on the same pace with the rest of the class. Additionally, it can enhance the child’s learning capabilities. When a child realizes that he or she is capable of an even better learning performance, he or she will become more confident in his or her class. Mike’s mother commented that he is now able to finish his school homework quicker than before, and would sometimes challenge himself to read more challenging books. We believe every child can learn with confidence if the right methods are being used.
